Apple’s original iPhone software centered a finger-driven Multi-Touch interface instead of a fixed hardware keyboard. It combined calling, Visual Voicemail, SMS, calendar and contact synchronization, a camera and photo library, and widescreen music and video playback with Cover Flow.[1]

Its internet layer included rich HTML Mail, Safari over Wi-Fi or EDGE, Google Maps, a dedicated YouTube client, and access to third-party services through standards-based web applications rather than native third-party installation. Apple’s retail announcement fixes the US public launch to June 29, 2007.[2][3][4][5]
