Public release

Apple's January announcement and final March launch notice both name March 24, 2001. The later notice says customers could buy Mac OS X in retail stores worldwide that Saturday, precisely matching the existing Public route.[1][2]

Platform transition

The release was both a new native platform and a migration system. Classic used the included Mac OS 9.1 environment for much existing software, Carbon gave revised Mac applications a native bridge, and Cocoa represented the new object-oriented path.[5][6]

Release package

The $129 US package carried seven languages on one CD and included Mac OS 9.1 and developer tools. The requirements named 128MB of memory and Apple's specified G3 and G4 systems.[7]

Public Beta and point-release boundary

The Public Beta preceded this route in September 2000 but is absent from the local seed and is not created here. CD burning, update-delivered stability work, OpenSSH, FTP, and NTP changes belong to later 10.0.x packages and remain excluded.[8][9][10]

Naming boundary

The local record carries the retrospective version note “Cheetah,” but the retained 2001 Apple launch material calls the product Mac OS X without that nickname. The article therefore uses the period public name and does not attribute the catalog note to Apple's launch marketing.[11]
