macOS 27.0 Beta 5

Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate Beta 5 on August 10, 2026 as build 26A5406e. As with the other five platforms in this cycle, the gap since Beta 4 stretched to twenty-one days rather than the fourteen-day rhythm that had held since June — the longest interval of the cycle. Coverage of the delay split: a couple of outlets described it as the longest stretch between updates so far, while another characterized the same gap as an expected part of a cycle moving into stability and refinement. Apple gave no public explanation either way.

Beta 5 continues the Rosetta retirement story introduced in Beta 4. Apps previously forced to run under Rosetta now launch natively again, Settings surfaces Intel-based software that will not run on the following major release, and a new Terminal command lets testers re-enable legacy Intel game support specifically during the beta period. Apple's notes state that all Intel-based software except legacy games will lose compatibility with the release after macOS 27.

Documented fixes span dozens of frameworks, including a repair to the installation block that had affected Reduced Security Mode Macs since Beta 1, an APFS First Aid false-positive, and numerous Siri, Mail, Messages, Music, Dock, Finder, and Safari corrections. Known issues still open include failed ACME certificate and Managed Device Attestation enrollments and a Setup Assistant window that can linger after account creation.

Beta-5 community reports include scattered performance complaints — Bluetooth dropouts and phantom low-battery warnings on one Apple silicon MacBook, Spaces frame-rate collapse and inconsistent Safari scrolling on another Mac, and elevated CPU use with active fans on a third — alongside confirmed fixes to a Shortcuts messaging action, a CPU-hogging AirPods Max helper process, Mail's compose-window font size, and an ultrawide-display refresh-rate bug introduced earlier in the cycle. One high-memory-use report was traced by the tester themselves to their own background software work rather than the OS.
